Illustrate your own beautiful hare and peacock artworks in watercolour and ink with Ella Johnston.


Paint a proud peacock or magnificent hare in this one-day workshop. With lots of support and guidance from artist and illustrator Ella Johnston, you will learn how to use mix, layer and use washes of watercolour to create gorgeous plumage or luxe, golden fur. You will also master fine line ink detailing with pigment ink pens as Ella will talk you through simple drawing techniques.  Working from visual references and templates  we’ll warm up with a simple watercolour exercises. You will use these as a basis for your final watercolour and pigment ink artwork. The hares and peacocks pictured here are by students achieved on the day.  The main pic is by Ju Pearce.

Suitable for all drawing ability.


  • Sheets of A4 watercolour paper, tracing paper,  brushes, pencils and pigment ink pens will be available to work with on the day. If you would like to create a larger scale artwork please bring your own watercolour paper. There will be plenty of watercolours paints to work with but if you don’t want to share please bring your own watercolour equipment – basic colours are fine as we’ll be mixing and playing around with various shades. You should also bring a hard surface such as a drawing or clipboard to place your paper on if you are uncomfortable working on a table top. Ella will bring visual references.
  • Bring your lunch but drinks and biscuits supplied throughout the day.
