The 6″x 6″ inch books are a lovely way to display your experiments with unusual materials combined with FME.  The course covers a number of different products and I use each session to show how they can be layered, stitched and finally embellished.  Emphasis is on experimenting. These small samples will then become a little library of treasures for you to access in the future when looking for inspiration for a bigger piece. The focus will be on machine embroidery but you can further develop each page at home, as much as you like with hand stitch.

Description

This course is ideal for those with free machine embroidery experience , wishing to explore new and exciting materials and techniques with a view to including them in your own textile work.  The course is structured into four practical studio days with two or three weeks in between sessions giving you plenty of time to experiment with the materials before the following session.  The course focus is on experimentation and asking ‘what if?

We will be incorporating layering and burning back..with silk and manmade fabrics combined with painted and manipulated Tyvek and Lutrador.  You will learn about the different weights of both these products and how I use them in my own textile work.  On the third studio session we will be stitching a copper panel for one of your book inserts and the final session covers reverse applique with melting lutrador and layering .

The course is process orientated so we will start with creating the painted pages using craft vilene followed by focus practical days both painting and stitch.  The course will be structured, looking at my samples for inspiration , but students will be encouraged to then your own spin on the process, creating as many new pages as your time allows. The focus will be on machine embroidery but you can embellish each page at home, as much as you like with Hand stitch.

Session One: Painting pages and products, Experiments with Lutrador

Session Two: Experiments with Copper

Session Three: Experiments with Tyvek (Fabric and Paper)

Session Four : Reverse applique with Lutrador Small stitched Panel.

This course is ideal for those who have attended ‘Design For Stitch’ or a City & Guilds machine embroidery course or similar. Get in touch to chat prior to booking, if you would like further information .

I really enjoyed this course learning so much that I can use in other projects. Alex is such a patient tutor and she clearly enjoys sharing her expertise. Would definitely recommend this course doing the 4 days over a period of time gave me the chance to continue working and trying new things at home then being able to get feedback and guidance at the next session.
