Description
We will be giving scrap neutral cloth a new life by using traditional and contemporary ways to join small pieces together. Introducing my signature hand stitch techniques including layering and inlay to emphasise contrast and transparency.
Layering & inlay will be part of the workshop as we will have an emphasis on transparency and contrasts of surface.
We will find a use for the smallest of sentimental and vulnerable fragments of cloth. Paring down to neutrals we will learn or revisit some of my signature and very favourite ways to join such as flat seam, French, butting, flange, stitch rivets, darning with overlays…..
The workshop is also about many other elements of art. Making decisions, selecting and responding to the unique qualities of cloth as well as transferring these skills back in your studio. Oh and enjoying…!
See ‘Requirements’ Tab. The workshop will be taught predominantly with neutral materials and thread but if you ‘need’ colour ( maybe some tiny sentimental pieces) then bring some in your scrap bag.
We will be working with running stitch mainly which means this workshop is suitable for a beginner.
But I will bring a new bias sampler for those who have been with me before to challenge the work further.
I will also introduce inlay, patchwork and appliqué.
We will discuss what is meant by the terms sashiko, boro and kantha.
It is meant to be a creative day. You may prefer to go away with one sample or maybe a number of pieces started. We will talk about their application and the relevance to contemporary ‘mending’.
