Description

In this one-day workshop you will create a collection of unique blue-and-white fabric patches using the fascinating cyanotype process on calico and other fabric remnants such as denim, silk, blended bamboo fibre and vintage fabrics.

You will learn how to coat small pieces of fabric, and arrange compositions using plants, lowers, paper cut outs, lace and other interesting materials and objects. The compositions will be exposed in sunlight (or under a UV lamp) and then washed in water to develop and reveal your beautiful prints.

Each patch becomes a little blue fragment of time, uniquely individual, capturing the shapes, textures and shadows of the objects you choose which can later be stitched, appliquéd, displayed or incorporated into future textile projects.

Please note cyanotype is an historical alternative photographic process using light sensitive iron salts which turn blue after exposure to sunlight. It has variable results depending on sun strength, exposure time, type of substrate and subject matter, but this is truly what makes it so interesting.

Please bring £8 for materials which will include fabric pieces, cyanotype solution, vinyl gloves and wear and tear of equipment.

Requirements:

Intricate leaves & flowers. These will benefit from being pressed under a heavy object for a day or two, but this is not essential.
Wear old clothes or bring an old shirt or apron to protect your clothes

£8 for materials which will include fabric remnants, cyanotype solution, vinyl gloves, wear and tear of equipment.
Tutor will bring some plants, paper cut outs etc so there will plenty if you don’t bring any and I will bring all the fabric you need but if you do bring some it need to be no bigger than A5 (remember these are patches!), natural material, prepped RFD. No bleach, phosphates, fabric softener etc. If in doubt wash in a very mild hand soap.
