Description
When creating a paper collage, I do not necessarily see the resulting quilt in my mind. That comes when I pull away and stand back from the design. The excitement then starts to happen when I think about what fabric to use, do I go with the colours that are featured or do I resort to my overflowing fabric stash and create another colour scheme altogether?
You can use this design process as a full quilt idea or a series of smaller pieces to interlock for an overall design. Use the paper cut outs as your colour palette and just have fun!
The plan is to create a collage around 8” square and then transfer it to a fabric piece measuring up to 16” square.

Day Two:
Creating your design in fabric. Learning different piecing techniques to help you stitch your design.
Requirements:
You will need to bring:
Lunch (there is a fridge and microwave)
Various magazines, colour paper
Paper Glue Stick (UHU)
Pens, Pencil
Ruler
Paper Scissors
Half a metre of background linen or cotton fabric of your choice – can be plain or patterned.
Various fabrics in a colour palette that matches your magazine cuttings. ( dont get too lost in this prior to the day – just bring a selection of your preferred fabrics. The same weight of fabrics is easier to work with than a mix of say velvets and cottons for example.

Artist Bio:
Sarah Hibbert is a modern British quilter influenced as much by art and architecture as quilting heritage. She has made a significant name for herself on both sides of the Atlantic, which has seen her work shown as well as being acquired for both public and private collections. Her work as been featured in various publications such as Today’s Quilter, Curated Quilts and Simply Moderne,
Her Reflections quilt was acquired by The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles in 2019 for their permanent collection to represent modern quilting. Her Macaroons quilt has been used as the poster for Festival of Quilts 2020 and 2021. She also hosted a solo gallery at this year’s Festival of Quilts.
Sarah loves the combination of old and new; of the traditional and contemporary; she uses patterns passed down through the generations but always adds a twist of her own. Working mainly in linen textural fabric, hand stitching, natural, rich tones and clever, but limited use of prints, she brings her quilts into the modern vibe of design to create a conversation between the fabrics.
Sarah’s second love is paper collage which has encouraged her to broaden her colour palette. From these simple paper creations, she has taken her designs through to quilt layouts and finished quilts. She loves seeing her design in two different mediums. This is what has inspired her first book From Collage to Quilt: Inspirational Quilting from What You Have which has just been published by Lucky Spool.
