Machine Embroidery Retreat at Ivy House Country Hotel *2026

Excited to announce a new teaching venue for 2026 where we will have three full glorious days painting and machine stitching in a beautiful setting on Oulton Broad.

Description

Join myself and Liz for a three day ‘retreat’ in the lovely Ivy House Country Hotel near Lowestoft.  Set in beautiful gardens we have chosen this hotel as it ticks all the boxes for learning as well as relaxing across three full days.  I have called it a ‘retreat’ but the emphasis is still very much on learning as we will cover a multitude of techniques and processes, through group and one to one demonstrations – the outcome being a stitched artwork for the wall.

  • Location: Ivy House Country Hotel, Suffolk, NR33 8HY
  • Dates: 22nd – 24th September 2026
  • Times: 9.30am – 5pm / 4pm on the 24th
  • Meals, accommodation all included
  • In collaboration with retreat organiser, Liz Broadhurst (Of Patchwork) she will be there throughout, assisting guests and facilitating the smooth running of our days.
  • The course covers many processes including illustration, composition and painting all brought together with free machine embroidery and hand stitch embellishment.   We will work directly from your favourite flower, observing its structure in various life stages before creating flowers and leaves using structural processes using innovative fabric manipulation techniques. The outcome will be three 3-D panels that can be framed or free hung as one panel.

Arrive at Hotel at 9.30am for Coffee Welcome and Introduction to ‘3D Mixed Media Triptych’

Day One :  10.30 am – 5pm

Having  planned a composition together we will use both translucent ink, paints, and metallic waxes to create textured and highlighted backgrounds using archival tissue, scrim and yarn.

Day Two: 10am – 5pm

Focuses on stitching into the composition , connecting all the pieces through layers of sheer fabric and meticulous stitching. Demonstrations will guide participants through techniques that accentuate floral and leaf details, alongside creating three-dimensional elements such as flower heads and leaves using soluble materials in a hoop and a craft soldering tool.

Day Three:  10am – 4pm

The morning will be devoted to refining and completing each panel, with additional demonstrations where individually applicable. We will also dedicate time to discussing methods for mounting and framing your A3 artwork, ensuring the finished piece is presented beautifully and professionally.

  • This course is ideal for individuals with prior experience in free machine embroidery who are eager to push creative boundaries by incorporating structural textile elements into their work. For returning participants, I can work with you on including your favourite bird / insects.
  • We will have an hour for lunch and finish at 5pm each day – students will have access to the workroom after dinner if they wish to continue to work on their project.
  • Bring your own sewing machine which can be dropped off right up to the Garden Room where we will be holding the course. (all ground floor)
  • Course is £625.00 to inc all meals ,teaching and accommodation.
  • For full details and booking form please email/message myself or give me a call.

Attached are some of the pictures I took whilst staying at the Ivy House – it is as their website describes; ‘ a hidden gem – nestled on the banks of Oulton Broad amongst 21 acres of gardens, lawns, ponds, marshes, and thatched barns all with direct access onto the broads’. September is an ideal time to enjoy their gardens and take inspiration from their beautiful flower beds…https://ivyhousecountryhotel.co.uk
