Description

This two-day  workshop is perfect for beginners to really get your teeth into learning the basic skills of mosaic-making; using the tools, cutting glass and ceramic, creating a successful design for mosaic, laying the pieces, adhering and grouting.
We will start by learning how to cut the materials and move fairly swiftly on to designing and making your own piece – practice is the key to accurate mosaic cutting and laying.  There will be lots of individual attention and throughout and lots of hints and tips to make your piece a success.
There will be a large variety of materials to play with – glass, ceramic, porcelain, stained glass – and books and ideas to give you inspiration, pens, tracing paper, carbon paper etc. – but if you have some ideas or if you wish to incorporate any broken china then do please bring them along too.
There will be a selection of 30cm MDF shapes to form the base of your project – square, circle, rectangle, birds, fish and some other shapes – and some smaller bases for trivets/table centres for those who prefer to work on a smaller scale.
Depending on how quickly you work, some of you may not quite finish your piece in the two days – it is quite a slow and meditative process, but don’t rush or worry, you will be given enough materials and know how to complete your piece at home.
If you are a returning student and have a particular project in mind let Alex know and she will put you in touch with Sarah to discuss size, shape and composition before the day.
Please bring £25.00 to cover materials on the day.

Artist Bio:

I create original contemporary mosaics – each work is completely unique; handmade using traditional techniques using materials as diverse as vitreous glass, porcelain, ceramic, mirror, stone and marble.

My mosaic pieces are predominantly abstract and with a very limited colour palette, using shade, tone, hue, texture, cutting and laying to create depth and interest and to emphasize the unique qualities of each material.

I have been making mosaic pieces for 20 years and I am continually inspired by the huge potential of the materials. Their colours, textures and the vagaries of hand-cutting mean that every single piece will be completely different – a marriage of the head, the heart, the hands and the materials.
Most of my work is for domestic interiors and gardens both art pieces for the wall and 3D sculptural items as well as more practical decorative pieces such as large serving platters and tables, although I do make the occasional corporate and public art piece.
I am based full-time in west London and my work is currently available in shops and galleries in London, Surrey, Oxford, Salisbury, York and Cumbria and private collections in the UK, Europe, Middle East, Australia and North America.  I also work extensively to commission.
I am a professional member of the British Association for Modern Mosaic (BAMM) and a founder member of Johnsons Island Artists. I am also a member of the Board of Trustees and a member of the Governing Body for the London School of Mosaic.
