Description

Having dipped your toe into the delights of ‘Sumptuous Soldering ‘, this course takes you into the realms of design and composition, using all the techniques used in SS1 and/or ‘Vase and Flowers’. Participants will be asked to draw out a ‘cartoon’ within a circle or frame shape of their choice prior to the day – taking their inspiration from the natural world. You could choose birds, fish, butterflies – email me your idea a few weeks before the first day. We will then use your design as the basis on which to layer up, print, foil and finally solder, creating a 3-d piece that could be presented within a large hoop or box frame.

Techniques include gilding, foiling, applique and acrylic printing before free- machine stitching the components and bringing together as one design ready to be soldered.

To achieve the most out of the course participants could work on their design in the weeks in between sessions.

This workshop is not suitable for those who suffer with breathing problems such as asthma.

Requirements

Your design drawn to scale. Chat to me before first day.
Craft Soldering tool such as Margaret Beale.
Machine & FME foot.
Travel iron if you have one.
pre-painted bondaweb or bring and paint with lumiere in studio.
pritstick
machine embroidery hoop but use mine if you haven’t got.
Heat gun
Selection of machine embroidery threads
Spare bobbins
Basic sewing kit to inc pins.
free motion foot and normal presser foot.
It would be great if students could bring any relevant indian blocks – relevant to their design, but I have a good selection.
A quilting hoop ( if you wish to work within a circle) – 13 inch diameter is a good size to work to – I wouldn’t go much bigger.
Fat Quarter of main base felt colour. For example: if leaves are most evident in your design bring some cheap acrylic/wook mix felt in different greens.
Any silk velvet in small pieces and/or dupion silk scraps in the colours of your subject matter.
